Meadowlands is a suburb of Johannesburg, Gauteng Province, South Africa. Meadowlands
suburb was founded in the early 1950s during the apartheid era for black residents from
Sophiatown. Over the past decade, South Africa has experienced an unprecedented growth
in patients requiring access to long-term therapies. Not only has South Africa introduced
universal access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) for patients living with HIV and AIDS, but
there has also been a steady increase in the number of patients with non-communicable
diseases (NCDs), requiring chronic therapy.

he PDU solution was introduced to align to the NDoH Central Chronic Medicine Dispensing and Distribution Programme (CCMDD) to respond to South Africa’s changing epidemiological profile. The Soweto health district is the most densely populated district in
the City of Johannesburg with around 26 facilities in the region and an estimated burden of
70 000 patients who take chronic medicine regularly. The PDUs at Ndo’faya Mall will serve
the northern half of the Soweto district with 5 units installed at this site.
